The continent of South America is a most geographically dramatic one. From the Andes mountain range to the icy expanses of Chile and Argentina’s Patagonia, there are more than plenty of places to please even the most experienced trekkers from around the world. If hiking some of the world’s most striking landscapes piques your interest, then consider these top 5 treks on your next Argentina vacation.

1. Mount Fitz Roy, El Chalten – This is perhaps the most famous and popular peak area to trek in Argentina. As the heart and icon of Los Glaciares National Park, the mountain remains one of the most technically challenging in terms of climbing. In many ways, because of its staggering slants and white peaks, it is the ultimate representation of Patagonia as many think of the region. A 5-day trek will fill you with more than enough of Fitz Roy’s beauty.

2. Cerro Torre, El Chalten – The area around this mountain is often trekked along with an excursion to Mount Fitz Roy. The first sight of Cerro Torre from the shores of Laguna Torre will put you in a state of awe. Trips to El Chalten can be easily incorporated as part of any Argentina or Buenos Aires vacation packages.

3. The W Circuit, Torres del Paine National Park – This national park rivals the majesty of Glaciers National Park on its own right. The famous W Circuit will take you past Grey Glacier, the view of Vallé Frances, and many vista points for seeing the 3 beautiful stone towers that the park is named after. The trek is not for the lighthearted as it usually takes place over a period of about 10 or 11 days, so be sure to bring enough provisions or hire an experienced guide and porter to assist you.

4. Ushuaia and Antarctica – Ushuaia is often considered the southernmost city on earth and its exclusive location so far south makes it a boon for trekkers. There are a number of great 4 to 6 day treks depending on your time and budget, including locations such as Paso Beban, Paso de Las 5 Lagunas, and Lago Alto Bahia Grande. For the most intrepid of travelers, consider taking a cruise to Antarctica where you will be able to explore one of the most inaccessible areas on the globe.

5. Tronador, Bariloche – This mountain stands an impressive 3,491 meters above sea level and its snow covered peak will leave you feeling humbled. Most trekkers enjoy discovering the Castaño Overo Glacier before crossing over to Tronador’s peak.
