With its seasons running opposite, South America is an ideal vacation
destination for travelers seeking to escape colder northern climes. Of
course, the virtues of vacationing in South America are much more than
that; ranging from paradisiacal settings to truly laidback beach
cultures, there is a beach for everyone. Here we highlight the best
beaches for your next South America vacation, from the tropical beaches
of Brazil to the surfing beaches of Chile.
A Brazil vacation immediately brings to mind images of beautiful
people lounging on beautiful beaches. There is perhaps no better place
to lay back and relax in the tropical sun. With an extensive coast,
Brazil is also a year round destination. The iconic beaches of Rio de
Janeiro, such as Ipanema and Copacobana, are perennial attractions. In
the south, the island city of Florianopolis boasts swells that attract
world-class surfers. There are also calmer beaches for swimming and
snorkeling. Further up the coast there is the tranquil Buzios, with over
20 beaches to suit all tastes. Salvador de Bahia also counts with an
ideal climate no matter the time of year. Even if you are inland, on an
Amazon tour for example, the river city of Manaus also has beaches worth
lounging on.
On the opposite side of South America is Ecuador, a tiny country with
out-sized beaches. Santa Elena Province provides some of the best
beaches for kite surfing, surfing, and water sports. In particular,
Montañita Beach is becoming a go-to Ecuador beach vacation destination,
enticing travelers with its laidback charm. Other beaches include Santa
Marianita, Puerto Cayo, Canoa, Mompiche, El Murcielago, Perdernales, and
a plethora more. Located 600 miles off the coast of mainland Ecuador,
the Galapagos Islands attract travelers for its diversity of wildlife,
but the beaches here never fail to captivate the hearts of travelers. In
combination with the flora and fauna under water and on land, this is a
beach vacation unlike any other.
Chile is another country with extensive coastline and beaches worth a
visit. Closest to the city of Santiago are the beaches of Valparaiso,
Viña del Mar, and Reñaca, all of which have swimming and surfing
beaches. Going north from there are: La Serena, Coquimbo, Iquique,
Antofagasta, Mejillones, and Arica. Given the country’s narrow width, a
visit to the beach can be easily added to a Chile travel plan that
includes places such as San Pedro de Atacama or a Torres del Paine tour.
